Online stress check using your camera
Your camera can't read your mind — but it can show how your heart is pacing. Here's what that tells you, honestly.
Reviewed by Pulselens editorial · Updated 4 October 2026
When you're under pressure, your nervous system speeds the heart up and makes beat timing more regular. Those two changes — faster pulse, lower HRV — are what a camera can pick up.
What the camera measures
- Heart rate: the most reliable camera reading.
- HRV: variation between beats; needs a very still, well-lit scan.
- Breathing rate: fast, shallow breathing often goes with tension.
What it can't tell you
The same readings appear after coffee, a poor night, a workout or a cold. No camera can tell these apart from emotional stress, so no honest tool gives you a "stress percentage".
How to test yourself fairly
- Scan at the same time each day, seated, before coffee.
- Compare against your own last week, not other people.
- Try 5 minutes of slow breathing (about 6 breaths a minute), then scan again to see your body respond.
